Around 200 members of Tamil Nadu’s ‘National South Indian River Interlinking Farmers’ Association’ traveling from Chennai to New Delhi on the GT Express were stopped at Narmadapuram railway station on Tuesday evening. Farmers were forcibly deboarded amid a commotion, and police have turned the station into a cantonment to control the situation. Farmers have set out for Delhi Organisation related to river linking and Cauvery water issues
This is the ‘National South Indian River Linking Farmers Organisation’ (SNSIF), the same organisation that protested the Cauvery water issue in Tamil Nadu. This organisation represents farmers from South India who are either opposing or participating in the national project of interlinking rivers. Going to Delhi with these 6-point demands Stopped at the same place last July as well
Last year too, this organisation was stopped from marching to Delhi. On July 28, 2024, the organisation’s president Ayyakannu, along with his 114 workers and office bearers, was going to Delhi by GT Express (12615). The group also included 15 women. Based on input received from Delhi Police, they were then deboarded at Narmadapuram station itself. At that time, they were going to protest demanding water from the Cauvery river for Tamil Nadu.
