Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant suffered an injury during the second unofficial Test match between India A and South Africa A, being played at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The incident took place during the first session on the third day, forcing Pant to retire hurt and return to the dressing room. Pant, who is part of India’s main squad for the upcoming first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, was withdrawn from the field as a precautionary measure. Though the injury does not appear to be serious, it has raised some concern for the Indian team management, especially with the Test series approaching soon. Pant Hit on the body and helmet by Moreki’s deliveries The incident occurred in the 34th over of the innings when Pant was struck multiple times by South Africa A’s fast bowler Shepo Moreki. The deliveries hit him on the body and helmet, after which he appeared in discomfort. Despite trying to continue batting, India A’s coach and physio decided to call him back to avoid further risk. Pant had come out to bat at number five early in the day and looked in good touch initially, hitting boundaries with ease. His first three scoring shots were a four, another four, and a six. However, after being hit by the short-pitched balls, he began to feel pain and eventually had to retire hurt. Recent return after a previous toe injury This injury comes not long after Pant’s recovery from a leg fracture that had kept him out of action for several months. He had missed the two-match home Test series against West Indies earlier this year after getting injured during the Manchester Test against England in July. Pant made his comeback earlier this month while captaining India A in a four-day match against South Africa A at the same venue. In that game, he scored 17 runs in the first innings but returned strongly with a brilliant 90 in the second innings to help India A secure victory. Pant’s Test career so far Rishabh Pant has been one of India’s most impactful Test players in recent years. In 47 Tests, he has scored 3,427 runs at an impressive average of 44.50. His record includes 8 centuries and 18 half-centuries, making him India’s wicketkeeper with the most Test hundreds. Apart from Tests, Pant has also represented India in 31 ODIs and 76 T20Is. Fans and selectors will now hope that his latest injury is minor and that he recovers fully in time for the important Test series against South Africa.
