A festive community event in Indore has turned into a controversy after a video of BJP OBC Morcha’s Madhya Pradesh vice-president, Nanuram Kumawat, went viral on social media. In the clip, Kumawat is seen dancing to Bollywood songs like “Saat Samundar Paar” and “Yamma Yamma” alongside a man dressed as a woman. The incident took place not at a private party, but during a Diwali Milan and Annakoot Mahotsav organized by the Shri Rajasthan Kumawat Kshatriya Samaj, Indore (M.P.). What began as a cultural gathering meant to promote unity within the community has now sparked outrage, with several community leaders accusing the BJP leader of promoting obscenity and indecency on a public platform. Now there is a demand that Nanuram Kumawat should come forward and publicly apologize to the community; otherwise, a protest will be launched against him. Meanwhile, Nanuram Kumawat says in this matter that this is a political conspiracy against him. Read the report… The event: From cultural meet to controversial dance The celebration was held on October 26 at a resort in the upscale Bicholi Mardana area of Indore. Organized by the Kumawat community, the event featured cultural programs and devotional songs during the day, attended by hundreds of families. However, as the evening progressed, the tone of the event shifted. Witnesses claim that after the folk music performances concluded, the DJ took over the stage, playing loud Bollywood tracks. It was then that Nanuram Kumawat joined the stage to dance, accompanied by a man dressed in a woman’s outfit, performing suggestive moves. Some other women dancers, reportedly hired for entertainment, were also seen performing on stage. Community leaders outraged over ‘indecent’ acts The video, once circulated online, triggered immediate backlash. The National Vice-President of the Kumawat Mahasabha, Neeraj Kumawat, condemned the incident, calling it “an insult to the community’s values.” He said, There were scenes of people waving currency notes and even inserting them into the dancer’s mouth. It was a disgraceful spectacle. For the first time, our community organized an event in a resort, and this kind of behavior destroyed its purpose. Neeraj added that many community members, including women and children, were left embarrassed. “This was supposed to be a cultural and social event celebrating Diwali, not a display of vulgar entertainment,” he remarked. Walkout in protest Neeraj Kumawat further stated that when he arrived at the event in the evening with his family, he was shocked to see what was happening on stage. “Senior members were present, including Nanuram Kumawat and his brother Bhawarlal Kumawat, who was the event convener. Despite the indecent acts, no one intervened. I went on stage to object, but nobody listened. I had no choice but to leave the event in embarrassment with my family.” He alleged that when he later expressed his disapproval on social media, Nanuram Kumawat responded with a message saying, “It was just for fun; the person dancing wasn’t a woman but a man.” Neeraj rejected this defence, calling it “a shameless justification of a shameful act.” He said, Putting currency notes in a man’s mouth dressed as a woman and dancing on stage cannot be excused as fun. It’s not part of our culture, and calling it a joke is even worse. According to him, when he confronted Kumawat during the event, the leader replied, “The Bhajans are over; now we’re just enjoying ourselves.” Women members express anger and disappointment Several women who attended the event voiced deep disappointment, requesting anonymity. One attendee said, “We had come with our children expecting a respectable social program. We never imagined witnessing such indecency on our community stage. It was humiliating — we couldn’t even face our children.” Many community elders have also criticized the leader’s conduct, arguing that his actions have tarnished the image of the Kumawat Samaj. One senior member said, As a BJP leader and a representative of our community, Nanuram Kumawat should have upheld dignity. If he behaves this way publicly, what example are we setting for our younger generation? Nanuram Kumawat’s defence: ‘A political conspiracy’ Responding to the backlash, Nanuram Kumawat denied all allegations of obscenity, claiming he is the victim of a political conspiracy. In a statement, he said, “The event featured a traditional folk segment in which men sometimes dress as women — a part of our cultural heritage. Certain individuals have deliberately edited parts of the video to defame me politically.” He added, “I have always conducted myself responsibly in public life. There was no obscenity or vulgarity in my actions. This is a deliberate attempt to damage my image.” Community divided, protest threat looms The controversy has split the Kumawat community into two camps. One faction is demanding a public apology from Nanuram Kumawat for allegedly bringing disgrace to society, while another group believes the video is being used to malign him politically. Opposing members have issued a clear warning: “If Nanuram Kumawat does not apologize publicly before the community soon, we will launch a movement against him.” For now, the Diwali gathering — intended to foster unity and cultural pride — has instead sparked division and outrage.
