Female health officer jumps to death in Narmada river:Doctor husband claims she was upset over not getting new ‘mangalsutra’, left home in anger

A woman working as a Community Health Officer (CHO) in Barwani district ended her life by jumping into the Narmada river. Her husband, a doctor from Indore, said she was upset over not receiving a mangalsutra and took the extreme step soon after an argument. The woman was rescued from the river but declared dead at the hospital. Jumped into Narmada after argument The incident happened around 9:30 AM on Wednesday in Chhoti Kasrawad village, Barwani. CHO Angoorbala Lonkhede, a resident of Kalyanpura village, had an argument with her husband over the mangalsutra that morning. After the dispute, she left home on her scooter and rode towards the Narmada bridge. Upon reaching there, she parked her vehicle and jumped into the river. Locals witnessed the incident People passing by the bridge saw her jump and immediately alerted nearby boatmen. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team stationed at the bridge rushed to rescue her. They pulled her out of the water and took her to hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. Husband followed but could not save her Angoorbala’s husband, Dr Krishna Lonkhede, is a paediatrician based in Indore. The couple had come to their native village, Kalyanpura, to celebrate Diwali with family. Dr Lonkhede told police that his wife was angry because he had not bought her a mangalsutra. He said he sensed she might take a drastic step, so he called Dial 100 and police immediately. He followed her in his car but could not reach in time to save her. The couple have two children — a son and a daughter. Police investigation underway Police from the City Kotwali station said they received a report of a woman jumping from the bridge. Her body was recovered and sent for post-mortem. A case of accidental death has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
