As homes and courtyards prepare for Mahalakshmi worship during Diwali, tantrics and aghoris from across India have gathered at Ujjain’s Chakratirth cremation ground to perform rituals seeking wealth (Lakshmi) through mantras, yantras, and spiritual practices. Amidst burning pyres, flickering lamps, and the smell of liquor, special midnight rituals are being performed daily. This unique tantric practice, which began on October 16, will continue until Diwali night on October 20, with tantrics staying in the cremation ground for five days to carry out their midnight rituals. Many tantrics perform Kubera Sadhana to attain wealth, while some observe Ulook (Owl) Sadhana, symbolically worshipping the owl, Lakshmi’s vehicle. According to mythology, performing this ritual on Amavasya night is believed to improve one’s financial condition. Pandit Mahesh Pujari says, Ujjain is not just a religious city, but also a “Siddha Nagari” (city of spiritual accomplishment). Here, both Satvik (pure) and Tamsik (intense/dark) forms of spiritual practices are accepted. Due to the south-facing form of the Mahakal temple, Ujjain’s cremation ground is considered especially auspicious for Tantric rituals. On the nights of Chaudas (14th day of lunar fortnight) and Amavasya (new moon), this place is considered extremely powerful for Tantrics. On the night of Diwali Amavasya, a gathering of practitioners takes place at the cremation ground, where Tantric rituals, Bhairav Puja, and special spiritual practices continue for hours. Spiritual practices Mahalakshmi Puja during Pradosh Kaal Pandit Amar Dibbewala said Mahalakshmi Puja will be most auspicious on October 20 between 5:54 PM and 8:24 PM. Clean the area with cow dung and cow urine, spread a red cloth facing east or west, and place idols of Mahalakshmi, Mahakali, and Mahasaraswati, or silver coins. Perform Abhishek with Gangajal, Panchamrit, and fragrant items, recite Shri Sukta or Kanakadhara Stotram, then light a lamp, offer incense and Naivedya, and conclude with Aarti.
