Cyber fraudsters duped Sudhir Nayak of ₹2.55 lakh after posing as a doctor. While searching online for the best neurosurgeon for his wife’s treatment on October 4, he called a number that turned out to be fake. The caller sent him a link and an APK file, which he unknowingly clicked, giving scammers access to his phone and bank account. The incident took place in Jabalpur, where within a few hours on October 6, multiple transactions drained his account, and on October 7, only ₹1 was withdrawn. Sudhir lodged a complaint with the cyber police on October 11. Case highlights new trend of scammers Officials said this case highlights a new trend, as scammers are now impersonating doctors instead of police or government officials. Fraud in the name of wife’s treatment The wife of Jabalpur’s Ganjipura area general store operator Sudhir Nayak had been struggling with foot problems for a long time. On October 4, she started searching online for the best neurosurgeon. Upon calling the number that appeared in the search, they were asked for the doctor’s name and the problem. They were asked for an appointment the next day and were sent an online link/APK file. Mobile hacked through APK file Sudhir Nayak clicked on a link and file that claimed a phone number could be registered by paying just ₹10. As soon as he did, his bank account got linked to the APK file, giving scammers access. The next day, multiple transactions were made, and a total of ₹2,55,682 was withdrawn from his account. Complaint filed with cyber police On October 6, Sudhir received several messages informing him that large sums had been withdrawn. The next day, only ₹1 was debited. He visited the Lard Ganj police station and his bank several times but got no help. Finally, on October 11, he filed a formal complaint with the cyber police.
