Indore took another major step in its Metro journey on Thursday as the train completed its longest trial run of 17 km, travelling from Gandhinagar station to Radisson Square. This is the first time the Metro has touched the heart of the city, marking a milestone in the project’s progress. Earlier trials were limited to shorter stretches, including a 7 km run and later a 13 km extension. Thursday’s trial, however, has set the stage for full operations on the 17 km route by next year. Journey through new localities During the trial, the Metro passed through areas where residents saw it for the very first time including Sukhliya, Vijay Nagar, and Malviya Nagar. Excited locals lined the tracks, waving at the train as it glided past. The Metro also slowed near the Chandragupta Maurya statue square, where crowds gathered to watch and cheer. The train covered the distance in about one hour, as its speed was deliberately kept low for testing. Officials said the pace will gradually be increased in subsequent trials until the Metro achieves its full operating speed. After reaching Radisson Square, the train returned to the Gandhinagar depot. Stations still under construction Despite the successful run, three stations along the route are not yet fully ready. This means that commercial operations for passengers cannot begin immediately. Authorities expect the pending stations to be completed within the next four months, after which the Metro Corporation will seek clearance from CMRS for regular passenger services. Future plans and challenges The 17 km stretch is expected to be operational for the public by 2026. However, officials admit that extending the line further will take longer, as the track construction beyond Radisson Square towards Khajrana Square is still incomplete. For now, the trial demonstrated smooth movement across the 17 km corridor, building confidence for gradual expansion. Indoreans show excitement The sight of the sleek Metro entering city limits for the first time thrilled residents. Many paused on the roadside to wave as the train passed, while children clapped as the horn sounded. For Indore’s commuters, the day carried a sense of anticipation that soon, they may finally ride the Metro from city hubs like Vijay Nagar and Radisson to Gandhinagar and onwards to the airport.
