Jabalpur citizens can now breathe easy after public protests against the state government’s move to make water bill payments monthly. The Mayor clarified that paying monthly will not be compulsory. Residents can continue to pay six-month or annual fees in a lump sum in April or September, without facing any penalties. The government recently launched a new ‘Water Bill Portal’ covering over 400 urban bodies statewide. The portal initially made monthly payment mandatory instead of annual payments, which triggered dissatisfaction among citizen groups and local representatives. Protests also erupted in Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, and Ujjain. Public organisations urged the government to prioritise citizens’ convenience in bill payments. Social organisations voice concerns P.G. Raj Pandey and other social organisations opposed the move, calling it inappropriate to implement without public consultation. They highlighted that monthly payments would place an additional financial burden on the poor, middle class, and senior citizens. Discounts for differently-abled and Senior Citizens maintained Mayor Jagat Bahadur Singh reassured citizens that there is no need to worry. Residents may pay monthly, or make full payments in two instalments in April and September without penalties. Differently-abled and senior citizens will continue to enjoy a 25% discount. Portal aims to improve transparency and flexibility The state-level water bill portal is designed to bring transparency similar to electricity or telephone bills. Its goal is to offer convenience, not hardship. The Jabalpur Municipal Corporation plans to propose this as a public-interest model across the state to ensure citizens face no unnecessary penalties or payment pressure.
