Amid outrage over 16 child deaths from kidney failure in Chhindwara, investigations reveal high levels of the toxic chemical diethylene glycol in two more cough syrups, Re Life and RespiFresh TR, both manufactured in Gujarat. The Madhya Pradesh Food and Drug Administration reported this on Monday, and steps to immediately ban both syrups have been initiated. Drug inspectors tested 19 samples From September 26–28, 2025, drug inspectors in Chhindwara tested 19 drug samples from retail outlets and hospitals. Reports show 4 syrups exceeded the safe limit of 0.1% diethylene glycol, posing risks of kidney failure and brain damage. Instructions are being given to recall from the market any syrups that are suspected. Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla said, The state government gives top priority to the health and safety of the public. No compromise on the quality of medicines is acceptable. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has given instructions for strict action against the culprits. The government is continuously taking action while remaining vigilant in this direction. SIT to determine accountability On October 1, 2025, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted, including drug inspectors from Jabalpur, Chhindwara, Balaghat, and Mandla districts, which will investigate the matter in depth and determine the accountability of the culprits.
