The much-awaited daily hearings on the 27% OBC reservation in Madhya Pradesh, which were originally scheduled to begin on September 24, have now been deferred to October 8. The postponement came after lawyers representing the general category requested additional time to review the 15,000-plus pages of documents submitted by the Madhya Pradesh government. During the proceedings, the Supreme Court sharply remarked, “We are ready, but you are not.” This indicates the court’s expectation that all parties must come fully prepared for the next hearing. CM Mohan Yadav urges political restraint Amid mounting political debate over the OBC reservation issue, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav advised Congress leaders to avoid rushing the matter. Speaking to the media, he said, “I want to tell my friends in Congress not to hurry. Unity in front of the court will benefit everyone. Rushing could harm the OBC community, which is not fair to any section.” He emphasized that the state government is committed to a fair resolution and that any haste could be detrimental to the community for which the reservation is intended. Government’s stance: 13% posts to be unheld When asked by Bhaskar reporters whether the Supreme Court hearing was delayed, CM Yadav clarified that the government had submitted its position through a multi-party consensus. “We have requested, by unanimous decision, that 13% of currently held posts be unheld. This will ensure proper implementation of the 27% OBC reservation while maintaining fairness for all,” he explained. The Chief Minister stressed that the government’s approach is in alignment with democratic principles and equitable treatment across all communities. Ensuring reservation for all communities CM Yadav further highlighted that the government’s actions are guided by the principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We have stated clearly that all communities—ST, SC, OBC, and general category—should receive their rightful share of reservation benefits,” he said. He added that the large volume of documents filed with the court—over 15,000 pages—requires careful examination, which is why additional time was sought. The next hearing is now scheduled for October 8, ensuring that all sides can present their arguments thoroughly. Political reactions and criticism The postponement drew sharp criticism from Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari, who tweeted that the hearing was delayed due to the state government lawyers’ lack of preparation. Patwari alleged that CM Yadav’s administration is intentionally stalling the case, creating frustration among OBC communities awaiting the 27% reservation. He claimed, “It seems the government is not serious about arguing in favor of OBC reservation. The case is repeatedly being delayed, causing harm to the intended beneficiaries.” Legal proceedings and court observations During the court proceedings, Attorney General R. Venkataramani and the state government’s legal team requested the Supreme Court to lift the interim stay on the implementation of the 27% OBC reservation. Lawyers representing the general category, however, argued that they had received all relevant documents only the previous day, making it impossible to study the material adequately before the scheduled hearing. Observing this, the Supreme Court adjourned the case and scheduled the next hearing for October 8, cautioning all parties to come fully prepared.
