In a stunning upset, Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist of Indian origin, defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary. Mamdani, leading with 43% of the vote, awaits final ranked-choice tabulations. Cuomo conceded, congratulating Mamdani. If confirmed, Mamdani would be the city’s first Muslim and Indian American mayor.
