retirement-planning-at-40-with-zero-savings:how-to-build-a-₹2.9-crore-corpus-in-20-years;-start-with-a-₹15,000-monthly-sip

If you are 40 and have not saved even a rupee for retirement, there is no need to panic. You still have 20 years to build a retirement fund. However, starting late means you may need to invest a larger amount every month. How does the maths of retirement planning work, how much money will you need, and how can you use EPF, PPF and NPS to build your corpus? Read this special QA report. Question 1: Is starting to save at 40 considered too late? Answer: No, starting at 40 is not too late, but it can be more expensive. If you plan to retire at 60, you still have 20 years to build your retirement fund. At this stage, the size of your retirement corpus will mainly depend on three factors: 1. How much you invest every month. 2. How much you increase your investment each year. 3. How many more years you continue earning. Question 2: How many crores do you need for a retirement fund? Answer: A financial planning rule of thumb suggests having a retirement corpus worth 25 to 30 times your annual expenses. Let’s understand this with an example. Suppose your household expenses are ₹30,000 a month today. Assuming annual inflation of 6%, your monthly expenses could rise to around ₹96,000 by the time you turn 60. This would mean annual expenses of approximately ₹11.5 lakh. At 25 times your annual expenses, you would need a retirement corpus of around ₹2.9 crore. Question 3: How much corpus can a monthly SIP of ₹15,000 generate? Answer: If you invest ₹15,000 every month through an SIP for 20 years, your total investment will be ₹36 lakh. At a 10% return: Your corpus will grow to approximately ₹1.15 crore in 20 years. At a 12% return: Your corpus will grow to around ₹1.5 crore. Question 4: What do you need to do to reach the ₹2.9 crore target? Answer: There are two ways to reach the ₹2.9 crore target: Fixed SIP: Assuming a 12% return, you would need to invest ₹29,000 every month through an SIP. Step-up SIP: Start with a monthly SIP of ₹15,000 and increase it by 10% every year. Your corpus could reach around ₹3 crore after 20 years. Question 5: What should your portfolio’s asset allocation look like at 40? Answer: Since you have 20 years until retirement, you can invest a larger share of your money through SIPs in diversified equity funds, such as index funds or flexi-cap funds. As you approach retirement, gradually shift some of your investments into hybrid funds. This can help reduce the risk of significant losses if the market falls just before you retire. Question 6: What are the biggest mistakes to avoid when planning for retirement? Answer: Keep these three points in mind: Build an emergency fund and get health insurance: Before investing for the long term, set aside at least three months’ expenses in an emergency fund and ensure you have health insurance. A single hospital bill can wipe out years of savings. Keep major family expenses separate: Higher education and weddings can be expensive, so invest separately for these goals. Avoid dipping into your retirement corpus to pay for them. Clear high-interest debt: Prioritise repaying expensive debt, such as credit card balances and personal loans. Redirect the money freed up from these EMIs towards your retirement SIP. Question 7: What should you do if you are unlikely to reach your target in 20 years? Answer: Consider extending your retirement age from 60 to 62 or 63. This would give your investments another one or two years to benefit from compounding returns.
