Sneakers become the most popular footwear category; festivals and communities now built around them Once worn mainly for jogging, running or cricket, sneakers have now become a fashion statement. Celebrities are helping drive this shift. A recent example is Virat Kohli’s One8 footwear brand, which was launched globally in New Delhi on 21 June. Kohli co-designed its flagship ‘Seam XVIII’ sneaker line, inspired by the seam of a red cricket ball. Within the first 24 hours of launch, One8 reportedly generated ₹138 crore in sales and sold more than 1.5 lakh pairs of shoes. Celebrities such as Ranbir Kapoor are also entering the sneaker market. Yet despite premium celebrity-designed collections, around 68% of sneaker sales in India come from the mass-market segment priced between ₹1,500 and ₹3,500. Alongside international brands, 21 funded and design-focused home-grown sneaker labels that emerged after the Covid-19 pandemic are now finding space in this growing market. Revenue of Indian sneaker brands has grown up to fourfold India now has around 21 sneaker brands, many of which are seeing strong growth. Take sneaker label Comet as an example.
