Elon Musk’s company SpaceX is building the world’s largest rocket launch complex in southern Louisiana, USA. The company plans to invest $100 billion, or around ₹9.50 lakh crore, in the project. ‘Starbase, Louisiana’ will be SpaceX’s second ‘Starbase’ campus. The new spaceport will cover 125,000 acres on Pecan Island, Louisiana, making it eight times larger than New York City’s Manhattan. SpaceX’s next-generation Starship rocket and AI-powered satellites will be launched into space from here. According to Landry, the spaceport will create at least 3,000 direct jobs in the region. Employees will earn an average annual salary of $92,600, or around ₹8.8 million, which is nearly twice the current average income in Vermilion Parish. The governor said, “This project will bring jobs, progress for communities, and protection for our coastal areas.” Campus Will Be ‘Self-Sustaining,’ Producing Its Own Fuel and Electricity SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said the campus will be completely ‘self-sustaining’. Shotwell said the facility aims to support thousands of Starship launches every year, although this will depend on engineering and regulatory approvals. There Will Be No Rocket Manufacturing, Only Launches The Louisiana campus will be very different from SpaceX’s Texas-based ‘Starbase’. Rockets are manufactured and assembled in Texas, while the Louisiana facility will not manufacture rockets. Its main focus will be high-frequency, or rapid, launches. Pecan Island’s location makes it suitable for sending rockets into sun-synchronous orbit. This type of orbit is considered ideal for solar-powered satellites.
