Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) will begin its 2026-27 season in India, with the opening match set to be played in Chennai in December. The announcement came from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the final day of his three-day visit to Australia on Friday. Albanese described this setup as part of the expanding sporting relationship between the two countries. The blockbuster opening match will feature the Melbourne Renegades facing the Perth Scorchers. The match is reportedly scheduled for December 12 at the historic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Notably, this fixture will be the first official match of a foreign domestic cricket league to be staged in India. However, the dates for this match have not been finalised yet. According to reports, this match could be played in December. The announcement was made public at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday, July 10. Why Australia’s T20 carnival is heading to India? For a very long time, BBL was seen as the second richest league in the world after the IPL. However, in recent years, Big Bash’s popularity has stagnated. Due to the rise of T20 leagues like SA20 and the ILT20, BBL is facing tough competition. Furthermore, Cricket Australia’s plans to privatise the Big Bash league were shelved after opposition from states like New South Wales and Queensland. India is the undisputed cricket market leader, and hosting the inaugural fixture in Chennai will help BBL lure more Indian audiences. Notably, a few final rounds of discussions at the government level are still pending before the match can be officially confirmed. Promotional matches have been held in India before This is not the first time that matches of a foreign league are being held in India. Indian grounds have hosted NBA, English Premier League, and La Liga matches. In 2019, America’s famous basketball league, the National Basketball Association (NBA), organised its official pre-season matches in India for the first time. Then, 2 matches were played between the Sacramento Kings and the Indiana Pacers in Mumbai. In 2018, Spanish league La Liga’s Girona FC and Australian A-League’s Melbourne City FC played a pre-season tournament with Indian club Kerala Blasters at Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
