The tenure of the Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel will be complete on Tuesday. Yet, the President’s Secretariat has not yet issued any official notification regarding either an extension of his tenure or the appointment of a new Governor. The absence of an announcement has fueled speculation in political circles over who will be appointed as the next Governor of the state. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav is scheduled to visit Delhi on Monday and stay overnight. The visit has triggered political speculation that he may hold discussions with Union Home Minister and senior BJP leaders on several political matters, including the appointment of the next Governor. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding the agenda of the visit. Chief Minister recently met the Governor CM Yadav met Governor Patel at Lok Bhavan on June 29. Later, on July 2, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya also met the Governor. The nomination process for the Datia Assembly by-election has also begun, leading to speculation that the CM’s Delhi visit may include discussions on the BJP’s candidate selection for the bypoll as well. Assumed office in July 2021 Mangubhai Chhaganbhai Patel assumed office as the 19th Governor of Madhya Pradesh on July 8, 2021, after his appointment order was issued on July 6, 2021. A veteran BJP leader from Gujarat, Patel previously served as a minister in the Gujarat government and was also the Acting Deputy Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly in 2014. Focused on sickle cell anaemia awareness During his tenure, Governor Patel placed special emphasis on awareness and prevention of sickle cell anaemia, particularly in tribal regions of Madhya Pradesh. The state made significant progress in implementing awareness campaigns and initiatives aimed at combating the disease during his tenure. Anandiben Patel received an extension twice Before Mangubhai Patel’s appointment, Anandiben Patel served as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh on two occasions. She first held the office from January 23, 2018, to July 29, 2019. Later, after the death of Governor Lalji Tandon, who served from July 29, 2019, to June 30, 2020, Anandiben Patel, while serving as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, was given additional charge of Madhya Pradesh from July 1, 2020, to July 7, 2021. One of the few Governors to complete a full 5-year term Under the Constitution, the tenure of a Governor is five years. With the completion of his term, attention is now focused on the President’s next decision—whether Mangubhai Patel will receive an extension or whether Madhya Pradesh will get a new Governor. Mangubhai Patel is among the few Governors in the past 15 years to complete a full five-year tenure in Madhya Pradesh. Before him, Ram Naresh Yadav served a full term as Governor from September 8, 2011, to September 7, 2016.
