The cleanliness system of Indore, the country’s cleanest city, will now be made even smarter with the help of modern technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IOT). For this, a 2-year joint research and technical cooperation will be initiated between Indore Municipal Corporation and IIM Indore regarding water, sanitation, and solid waste management. This proposal was approved in the Mayor-in-Council (MIC) meeting held under the chairmanship of Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava. Under the plan, IIM Indore’s Center of Excellence and the Municipal Corporation will jointly conduct a scientific study of the city’s sanitation system in a phased manner. The objective is to develop Indore’s sanitation model to be technology-based, more effective and aligned with future needs. First phase to focus on waste management and water reuse In the first phase from August to December 2026, the solid waste management system will be evaluated. This will include studying the efficiency of door-to-door garbage collection, transportation system, and possibilities of reusing treated wastewater. Sewerage will be monitored through IOT In the second phase, new financial models will be prepared for the operation of public toilets. Along with this, an IoT-based sewerage monitoring system will be tested. A digital database of new technologies and innovations related to waste management will also be prepared. AI will assess future needs From April to September 2027, in the third phase, work will be done on institutional capacity building and future planning. During this period, the possibilities of developing AI-based forecasting and decision support systems will be studied, so that decisions related to water, sanitation and waste management can be more accurate, scientific and effective. Will become a model for other cities Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said that Indore has consistently led the country in the field of cleanliness. Now the goal is to take this model to new heights through technology, research and innovation. He said that this partnership with IIM Indore will develop data-based and smart solutions, which will make the city’s sanitation system more transparent, sustainable and scientific. Along with this, Indore’s model will also prove to be a guide for other cities in the country.
