Two brothers have been arrested for allegedly beating an elderly man to death in Betul district after a self-styled Tantrik claimed the victim had used black magic on their sister. According to Athner police, the deceased has been identified as Bansilal Nagle, a resident of Pandhurana village. Police alleged that the accused, Vinod Nagle and his cousin Ravi Nagle, were influenced by a self-styled Tantrik, Ramesh alias Jangli, who convinced them that Bansilal was responsible for their sister’s prolonged illness through witchcraft. The three accused have been arrested and booked for murder and other relevant offences. Body found beneath bridge Police said they received a Dial-112 alert on June 30 about the body of an elderly man lying beneath a bridge over a river in Mandvi village. Officers reached the spot and launched an investigation. Following a complaint by the victim’s son, Punjabrao Nagle, a case was registered, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination. Police also reviewed CCTV footage from the surrounding area. Footage from a nearby girls’ school allegedly showed Vinod Nagle and Ravi Nagle heading towards the crime scene around the time of the incident. Based on the evidence, police detained the two men for questioning. Accused blamed victim for sister’s illness During interrogation, the accused told police that their sister had been ill for a long time and had not recovered despite receiving medical treatment. Unable to determine the cause of her illness, they approached the self-styled tantrik, who allegedly told them that Bansilal had cast black magic on their sister, preventing her recovery. Police said the brothers believed the claim and began holding the elderly man responsible for their sister’s condition. Victim allegedly attacked while returning from market Investigating officer Mangilal Thakre said the accused had an argument with Bansilal on the day of the incident. Later, while the victim was returning from the weekly market, the two brothers allegedly intercepted him at a secluded spot and assaulted him brutally. Police said the accused then carried the critically injured man beneath a nearby bridge, where they allegedly attacked him again, resulting in his death, before fleeing the scene. According to investigators, the preliminary inquiry indicates that the murder was driven by superstition. All three accused have been booked under charges of murder and other applicable provisions of law, and further investigation is underway.
