India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill has made big gains in the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday. Gill rose to the number 2 spot, surpassing his fellow compatriot Virat Kohli, who was sidelined from the Afghanistan series due to an injury. Ahead of next month’s 3-match ODI series against England, Shubman is breathing down the neck of the world number 1, Daryl Mitchell. Gill nears Mitchell’s crown, Rahul falls out of top ten There was bittersweet news in the latest ODI rankings issued on Wednesday as Shubman jumped 3 places to surpass Kohli and claim the number 2 spot. The Indian captain not only helped his team clean sweep Afghanistan 3-0 at home, but he also finished the series as the leading run-scorer with 238 runs, including two match-winning knocks in the first two games. Gill scored 84* in the series opener, while smashing 154 in the heat of Lucknow. He didn’t come out to bat in the last match in Chennai. The 26-year-old is trailing Daryl Mitchell by only 24 rating points, as Virat fell to third place, and Rohit Sharma remains steady at number 4. KL Rahul slipped out of the top ten to eleventh spot. Ishan Kishan jumps 21 spots The wicketkeeper batter, who smashed a hundred in the second ODI, jumped a whopping 21 spots to move to equal 43rd place. Both Gill and Kishan will fancy their chances of making more inroads as India will face England in a five-match T20I series, followed by three ODIs from 14 to 19 July. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a match-winning century in the last match of the series and jumped 84 spots.
