The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced India’s ODI squad for the three-match series against England next month. And a certain Hardik Pandya’s name was missing from the list. His absence was not very surprising, given that there have been reports stating that he was out injured. The BCCI also did not give an official reason, like they generally do, to explain Pandya’s absence. The all-rounder was last seen in action for the Mumbai Indians in their last league stage match on 24 May. ‘Selectors unsure if Hardik can bowl 10 overs’ According to a report by Cricbuzz, the selectors are not sure if Pandya will be able to bowl his full 10-over quota in an ODI. Interestingly enough, Pandya’s last ODI appearance came way back in 2025, in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy against New Zealand, where he bowled just three overs, conceding 30 runs while going wicketless. What perhaps reinforces the selectors’ stance is the recent comments made by Team India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, who, in a press conference during the ODI series against Afghanistan, had said that it was ‘difficult to find a finisher who can give you overs as well.’ In that light, the reported uncertainty around Pandya’s bowling might be of concern, not just for Team India but also for his future in ODIs as well. Pandya has missed four ODI series since the 2025 Champions Trophy- the tour of Australia in October 2025 and the home series against South Africa, New Zealand and Afghanistan which followed suit. After the T20Is and ODIs against England, Team India would head to Harare for a T20I series. India’s next ODI series would be a home affair against the West Indies, comprising three matches. India would also play ODI series against New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. The 32-year-old played 10 matches, scoring just 206 runs while having a strike rate of 138.25 and a top score of 40. With the ball in hand, Pandya picked up just four wickets while having an economy in excess of 11.42. There have been reports triggering uncertainty around Pandya’s future at the Mumbai Indians. A PTI report last month had stated that the all-rounder was ‘mentally stressed and completely exhausted’ and that both the player and the franchise agreed to part ways. As per Cricbuzz, the Mumbai Indians are set to conduct a season review after which there will be clarity on Pandya’s future with the five-time champions.
