bcci-won’t-fine-vaibhav-sooryavanshi,-devajit-saikia-confirms:15-year-old-was-involved-in-fight-with-sri-lankan-cricketer-vishen-halambage

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that the apex board will not take any action against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after he was involved in a fight with Sri Lanka A cricketer Vishen Halambage. After Vaibhav’s physical altercation with Vishen, it was reported by several media outlets that Sooryavanshi may be cautioned by the BCCI; however, Saikia has clarified that the board does not have the authority to take action since what happened in the match falls under the jurisdiction of the match referee. During an interaction with PTI, Saikia said, “A lot of things are being discussed on social media, including speculation that the BCCI is contemplating action. But do you want the BCCI to step into the domain of the match referee? The BCCI is not the authority in such matters. We should not intrude into an area where the match referee and the umpires are the primary officials empowered to take decisions regarding incidents that occur on the field of play.” BCCI won’t caution Sooryavanshi BCCI supremo Saikia clarified that whatever punishment Vaibhav may or may not face lies under the jurisdiction of the match referee. “The responsibility lies with the match referee. If anything goes wrong, the match referee will take a call, and the umpires will take a call. There is already a system in place,” said Saikia. He added, “A lot of speculation is being made, but these are baseless speculations. I assure you that the BCCI will not intrude into the domain of the match referee, who is the competent authority. If there is anything wrong on the field relating to a player or any cricketing activity, the appropriate officials will deal with it.” Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can be an asset for the next 2-3 decades While lavishing praise on the IPL prodigy, Saikia stated that his parents were allowed to travel with Vaibhav to Sri Lanka, and they will also join the 15-year-old for his maiden India call-up to Ireland and England tours. The move will allow his parents to be with him since he is still very young. “You see, not all national teams at the senior level have a 14 or 15-year-old in their squad. After many decades, we have someone like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. At one point in time, it was Sachin Tendulkar who made it to the national team at such a young age,” said the BCCI secretary. “So, we thought it proper to allow his parents to travel with him. I am very happy that his parents are also taking good care of their kid, who is an asset for Indian cricket not only now but for the next two or three decades,” Saikia stated.
