More and more people in India are asking to buy Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cars, said the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (Fada). This has happened because of the recent series of hike of prices of petrol and diesel, undertaken by the government due to a sharp increment in the rates of international crude oil. EVs and CNG vehicles are getting more traction right now because of the fuel price hike. We are getting extremely high enquiries for such vehicles. -Saharsh Damani, CEO, Fada By how much govt increased fuel prices since Iran war beginning? The war involving Iran made global oil very expensive. Because of this, the Government of India increased fuel prices multiple times: Petrol: Oil companies increased petrol prices by ₹7.40 per litre Diesel rates went up by ₹7.52 per litre. CNG went up by ₹6 per kg since the Iran war beginning Is the CNG price hike lower? The price hike for CNG is lower than petrol and diesel by over ₹1 per unit. While petrol and diesel prices increased by over ₹7 per unit, CNG only increased by about ₹6 per unit. Because CNG and electricity are cheaper than petrol, many buyers are switching to these options to save money. Do EVs and CNG Cars give better mileage? EVs and CNG cars are much cheaper to run. These do not just give better mileage but also save help car owners save money. CNG Cars: Instead of litres, CNG is measured in kilograms (kg). A normal petrol car gives around 17 to 20 kilometres (km) per litre. A CNG car can easily give 26 to 34 km per kilogram. That means you get much more distance covered from the same amount of fuel. EVs: EVs do not use fuel at all; these run on battery. Instead of checking km travelled per litre, you look at how far the car goes on a single full charge. A good EV can run for 250 to 350 km after charging the battery just once. How much money can you save on driving an EV? Imagine you drive your car for 1,000 km every month in New Delhi. Here is how much it will cost you based on current fuel prices: The Big Saving: If you drive an EV instead of a petrol car, you save around ₹5,207 every month. In one year, that is nearly ₹62,484 left in your pocket! Even with a CNG car, you cut your monthly fuel bill exactly in half. Car sales in May 2026 CNG Cars: CNG cars took a 23.34% share of all passenger cars sold in India. This is a big growth from last year when the share was 19.93%. EVs: EVs reached a 6.63% share of total car sales. This is up from 4.51% in May last year. According to the Fada data, overall passenger car sales in India jumped significantly. Total retail car sales grew by 23.25% compared to the same month last year, rising to 4,02,591 units. Within this massive growth, CNG and EV models outpaced traditional fuels, allowing them to capture a larger percentage of the Indian car market.
