india-us-to-conclude-3-day-trade-talks-today:top-american-official-says-deal-is-almost-finalised

India and the US are expected to wind up the 3-day meeting on the finalisation of the interim trade deal on Thursday, 4 June, 2026. Both sides might announce the signing of the fist tranche of the long pending agreement next week if negotiation rounds have gone well without any discrepancies; otherwise, there might be another round of talks in the coming times. Earlier, Union Minister Piyush Goyal had said that the high-level trade talks between India and the US would be wrapped up on 4 June, 2026. He had added that officials from both countries would finalize the interim trade agreement in Delhi, whose framework was agreed upon in February this year. Suggesting that India-United States trade deal was 99% complete, US Ambassador Sergio Gor said that both sides were trying to resolve the remaining 1% and expected the long-awaited pact to be inked within the next several weeks. The objective of the meeting was to give final legal shape to the interim agreement In this 3-day meeting, the American delegation was led by their chief negotiator Brendan Lynch. Meanwhile, the Indian team was being commanded by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Chief Negotiator Darpan Jain. According to the Ministry of Commerce, the main objective of this meeting was to legally finalize the interim agreement. Along with this, both sides would advance negotiations in several important areas such as market access, non-tariff measures, customs, trade facilitation, investment promotion, and economic security alignment under the comprehensive bilateral trade agreement (BTA). US applies pressure tactics amid BTA talks Amidst the BTA talks, the US administration had proposed imposition of additional 12.5% tariffs on India, pressing charges of encouraging forced labour. The US Trade Representative has proposed slapping 12.5% additional duties on 54 countries, including India, for failing to prohibit (stop) the import of goods produced with forced labour. Experts had said that the accusations were just pressure tactics to make India succumb to US conditions in the BTA talks. What is an Interim Trade Agreement? It takes time to create a complete (full) trade agreement (FTA) between two countries many months or years. Until then, both countries make a small, temporary agreement to provide some immediate benefits. This is called an Interim Trade Agreement.
