India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav is set to lose his leadership role just three months after guiding the team to the T20 World Cup title on home soil. The decision comes ahead of India’s upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland and England later this month. Not only is he likely to be removed as captain, but he may also find it difficult to secure a place in the T20I squad moving forward. Reportedly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), along with the selection committee and team management, has decided to begin a new chapter in India’s T20 setup. The move is part of the team’s planning for the next cycle of international tournaments. Notably, BCCI is yet to announce the T20I squad for the Ireland and England tour. Team India looking for new T20I captain after Surya’s snub A senior BCCI official revealed that discussions involving the selection committee, team management, and head coach Gautam Gambhir have resulted in a decision to appoint a new captain. According to the Indian Express report, the selection committee, the BCCI, and the team management, in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir, had decided that it was time for India to move forward with a new T20I captain. The official said that although Suryakumar Yadav led the team to the T20 World Cup title, concerns over his recent form and long-term future in the format prompted the management to make a change in leadership. Poor form raises concerns for Suryakumar While Suryakumar enjoyed success as captain, his performances with the bat have remained a concern over the past two years. The explosive batter has struggled to produce consistent runs and his form dipped further during IPL 2026. Representing the Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar scored only 270 runs in 13 innings during the season. Despite ending the tournament with a half-century against the Rajasthan Royals, he averaged just 20.76, far below expectations for a player of his stature. His batting struggles also continued during India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign, where questions were repeatedly raised about his contributions with the bat despite the team’s overall success.
