Mom-Dad, you trusted that your daughter would study and become a doctor, but now I don’t have the courage to take the NEET exam again. Akanksha Chaturvedi, a NEET 2026 aspirant from Magania village in Mauganj district, died by suicide in Nagpur on May 20. A suicide note that has now surfaced reveals her disappointment over her exam prospects. In the note, she wrote that she had expected good marks in her first attempt but no longer felt confident about performing well again, and apologised to her parents. According to her family, Akanksha became deeply upset after the alleged NEET paper leak. To understand the circumstances that led to the tragedy, Dainik Bhaskar’s team visited her village and spoke to her family members. Congress leaders reached home, and then the matter came to light At one end of the village is the large house of Akanksha’s father, Krishna Kumar Chaturvedi. His brother Daddi Kumar also lives with him. Family members are sitting on chairs in the house’s verandah. On the other side, recently harvested grain from the fields is kept in sacks. Two days ago, Congress leaders came to meet Krishna Kumar. Only after this did the matter come to the media. Father said – She will not come back now Krishna Kumar says – Let anyone say anything. We know our daughter is not coming back now. She was smart in her studies. We had high hopes. That’s why, despite not having the means, we sent her to Nagpur for studies. She had called after taking the exam. She was very happy. Her papers went very well, but as soon as the news of the paper leak and then cancellation came, she broke down. She felt that all her hard work had gone to waste. Saying this much, she started crying. Father, a heart patient, took a loan of 15 lakhs for coaching Seeing Krishna Kumar’s tears, his younger brother Daddi Prasad supports him and takes him inside. He returns after a while and says. Brother is a heart patient. He has had three attacks. Millions of rupees have been spent on treatment. Despite this, he did not let his daughter’s education suffer. Akanksha understood her father’s pain and the family’s condition closely. This was why she did not want to be a further burden on the family. This pressure made her so weak that she took this step. Daddi Prasad says- Akanksha was sharp in studies since childhood. She was educated in Nagpur. There, her father, Krishna Kumar Chaturvedi, has been working as a cook for 20 years, living with his family. They had only two children: Akanksha and Raj. Raj is in ninth grade. Akanksha wanted to become a doctor. Her father made every possible effort to fulfil her wish. For NEET preparation and coaching, the family took a loan from a Kisan Credit Card (KCC). They borrowed from relatives. They had already taken a loan of about 15 lakh rupees for their daughter’s education. We didn’t expect her to do something like this Daddi Prasad says- Akanksha was hardworking and promising. She was happy after taking the NEET exam. She was confident that she would be selected this time, but after the news of the paper leak came, her behaviour started to change. She reduced her eating and drinking. She also stopped talking to people. She had sunk into despair internally. She started to feel that if the exam was held again, her family would not be able to afford her preparation and expenses. This worry gradually broke her morale. There was no expectation that she would take such a step. Hanged herself from the ceiling fan It was May 20th that day. Everyone in Nagpur had gone to their respective work. It was afternoon. She hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her room. Her family members received the news at 3:30 PM. They took her to the hospital, but her breath had already stopped. Due to it being night, the post-mortem was not conducted. After the post-mortem on May 21st, her body was brought here on May 22nd, the next day. Her body was kept in the same courtyard where she used to play with me, calling me ‘uncle’. Seeing this, my heart was breaking.
