Commercial LPG cylinder prices have been increased by up to ₹53.50 from June 1, adding to operating costs for restaurants, hotels and catering businesses across the country. The price revision comes as part of a series of changes taking effect at the start of the month. In Delhi, the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder has risen by ₹42 to ₹3,113.50 from ₹3,071.50. Kolkata recorded the steepest increase of ₹53.50, while prices in Mumbai and Chennai were raised by ₹43.50 and ₹46 respectively. Industry observers say the hike could lead to higher prices for food and catering services, as commercial establishments pass on increased fuel costs to consumers. 5-kg FTL cylinder price increased The price of the 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder, popularly known as the “Chhotu” cylinder, has also been raised by ₹11. The cylinder now costs ₹821.50, compared with ₹810.50 earlier. FTL cylinders are commonly used by migrant workers, students and small shopkeepers because they can be purchased without address proof. In contrast, the price of the 5-kg domestic LPG cylinder remains unchanged at ₹339. What is LPG and how much does India need it? LPG or Liquid Petroleum Gas is mainly a mixture of two gases – propane and butane. It is used as cooking gas. LPG is not something that comes directly from the ground. It is made from by-products during the refining of petroleum products. For example – like buttermilk is produced while making ghee from curd. Similarly, LPG is produced during oil refinery and natural gas processing.
