A major section of the Narmada–Kshipra pipeline burst near Mhow, close to Indore, on Sunday afternoon, triggering panic in the area and leading to the wastage of a large quantity of water. The incident occurred at around 12 p.m. near Bherughat on the Indore–Khandwa Road. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion-like sound moments before a massive jet of water shot nearly 150 feet into the air. Water fountain reached height of power lines According to eyewitnesses, the pressure inside the pipeline was so intense that the water plume appeared to reach the height of nearby high-tension electricity lines. Within minutes, large volumes of water spread across the surrounding area, flooding nearby properties and entering several homes. Residents reported damage to household belongings as water inundated parts of the locality. Roads flooded, traffic disrupted The burst also caused waterlogging on roads around the Bheru Temple area. The strong flow of water disrupted traffic, creating difficulties for motorists. Several two-wheeler riders were seen navigating through flooded sections, while others stopped their vehicles as a safety precaution. Residents concerned over massive water wastage Local residents said the sound of the pipeline rupture could be heard from a considerable distance, causing temporary panic in the neighbourhood. Many also expressed concern over the enormous quantity of water lost, particularly at a time when several regions continue to face water shortages. Officials rush to site After receiving information about the incident, officials and staff from the concerned department reached the location and immediately began efforts to shut off the water supply to the damaged section of the pipeline. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage, while repair work has already begun. Cause of burst under investigation Officials said the situation is now under control, although the incident caused significant waterlogging and disrupted traffic movement in the area. An investigation has also been launched to determine the exact cause of the pipeline failure.
