Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has increased the price of CNG by ₹2 per kg in Mumbai and nearby areas. At the same time, the price of domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) has gone up by 50 paise per Standard Cubic Metre (SCM). The revised prices came into effect from midnight on 29–30 May. The price of CNG has risen from ₹84 per kg to ₹86 per kg. Domestic PNG now costs ₹52 per SCM. This is the second fuel price increase in 15 days. Earlier, prices were also raised by ₹2 on 13–14 May. Prices increased due to domestic gas shortage and weak rupee Company officials said the increase is due to a lower supply of domestic gas. As a result, MGL has had to depend on more expensive external sources. They also said that the weakening of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar has added to the overall cost. Despite the increase, CNG is cheaper than Petrol-Diesel MGL says natural gas remains one of the most affordable fuels available. According to the company, CNG users still save around 45% compared to petrol and about 12% compared to diesel, based on current fuel prices in Mumbai. Demand to increase fare by ₹2 to ₹3 after CNG price hike After the latest price rise, auto-rickshaw and taxi unions have demanded a fare increase of ₹2 to ₹3 to cover higher operating costs.
