Heavy rain and strong storms brought major weather changes across Uttar Pradesh on the fifth day of Nautapa on Friday. Lucknow and Prayagraj witnessed heavy rain and winds reaching 100 kmph early in the morning, while a hailstorm was reported in Saharanpur. In Jhansi, a unipole installed by the municipal corporation collapsed during the storm. Rain has continued in Varanasi since morning. The India Meteorological Department said the spell of rain may continue till May 31. An orange alert for rain has been issued in 24 districts, while storm warnings are in place across all 75 districts of the state. Rain had already started in several districts, including Ghaziabad, Mathura, Kasganj, Sambhal and Farrukhabad, late on Thursday evening. Dark clouds covered Meerut, while Shahjahanpur received rain after a dust storm. Earlier, a heavy hailstorm was also reported in Jhansi and Badaun. Despite the sudden change in weather, heatwave conditions remained severe in many areas on Thursday. Banda was the hottest city in the state with a temperature of 47.8°C. In Prayagraj, people were seen covering themselves while travelling to escape the scorching heat. Here, the rain started after lightning struck. Lucknow’s meteorologist, Atul Kumar Singh, said- A new Western Disturbance is becoming active from today. A cyclonic circulation is present at a height over South Bihar and surrounding areas. In such a situation, there may be rain with thunderstorms in the state. This can provide relief from the heat. The temperature may drop by 68C.
