The Income Tax Department has made the excel utility for ITR Form-2 live for Assessment Year 2026-27 (Financial Year 2025-26). Now taxpayers can download it from the department’s portal and prepare their tax calculations. Earlier, the department had launched the facility for ITR-1 and ITR-4 on 17 May. After completing the form, a ‘JSON’ file will be created, which you will have to upload on the Income Tax portal. If you are filing a return for the first time, you will have to register on the portal through your PAN and Aadhaar. 31 July is the last date, delay will attract penalty The last date for filing returns for common taxpayers is 31 July 2026. However, for some people in the business class (ITR-3 and 4), it is 31 August. If you miss the 31 July deadline, you can file a ‘belated return’ by paying a penalty till 31 December. Expert Tip: Don’t file returns before 15 June If you are a salaried employee, don’t rush. Companies have time until May 31 to submit TDS data. After that, it takes 10-15 days for it to be updated in your Form 26AS and AIS. If you file your return before 15 June, there is a risk of data mismatch, which can cause your refund to get stuck.
