More than 100 truck drivers created chaos at the Metevani RTO checkpost in Madhya Pradesh’s Seoni district on Tuesday night after a truck driver was allegedly assaulted during a vehicle inspection. The incident took place in the Kurai police station area along National Highway-44. Angry drivers vandalized and overturned an RTO vehicle and also set a temporary hut near the checkpost on fire. RTO officials and staff reportedly fled the spot to save themselves as tensions escalated. Dispute during vehicle checking triggered violence According to officials, the trouble began around 10 pm when an argument broke out between checkpost employees and a truck driver during routine vehicle inspection. The drivers alleged that the truck driver was beaten by the staff members. As news of the incident spread, several truck drivers present on the highway gathered at the checkpost and staged a protest. It is alleged that the staff assaulted the driver. As soon as this news spread, other drivers present on the highway gathered at the spot. Seeing the situation escalate, RTO officials and staff left the scene. RTO vehicle overturned and hut set on fire During this, the enraged drivers overturned and damaged the RTO vehicle parked at the checkpoint. The protesters also set fire to a nearby hut, causing chaos. Due to the commotion, traffic on National Highway-44 was disrupted for about 15 minutes. Police controlled situation, calmed matter As soon as information about the incident was received, Kurwai police, who were on a flag march, reached the spot. The police pacified the drivers by explaining the situation, calmed the matter, and restored traffic. However, the driver who was assaulted, instead of filing a complaint, left for Maharashtra with his truck. Assurance of investigation and action against culprits After the incident, senior officials including RTO Devesh Batham and Tehsildar reached the spot. The RTO officer assured an impartial investigation into the matter. Kurwai Police Station in-charge Kripal Singh Tekam said that the victim driver is being searched for. Based on his statement, the actual sequence of events will be ascertained and legal action will be taken.
