4-common-factors-among-all-ipl-playoff-teams:top-order-contributed-1300+-runs,-bowlers-picked-45-wickets;-most-200+-totals

The playoff lineup for IPL 2026 has been decided. Qualifier-1 will be played between Bengaluru and Gujarat on May 26, while Hyderabad and Rajasthan will clash in the Eliminator on May 27. The journey of all four playoff teams looked different, but some common patterns emerged in the statistics, which laid the foundation for their successful season. These four factors are – a strong top order, the performance of the top three bowlers, most 200+ scores, and consistency. 1. Consistent runs from the top order This season, there were 5 teams whose top 3 run-scorers combined for more than 1300 runs. Four of these teams made it to the playoffs. Only the Punjab team, whose three batsmen together crossed the 1300-run mark, failed to secure a playoff spot. The top three run-scorers of the remaining five teams could not even combine for 1200 runs. 2. Three bowlers combined for 45 or more wickets Throughout the season, only 5 teams had their best performing 3 bowlers collectively take 45 or more wickets. Of these, four reached the playoffs. Only Chennai was a team whose top-3 bowlers collectively took 48 wickets, yet they could not make it to the top-4. Among the remaining five teams, the best three bowlers of four teams – Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Punjab – did not even take 40 wickets collectively. Kolkata’s best three bowlers took 44 wickets. 3. Ability to score 200+ totals most times This time, five teams have scored 200 or more at least 6 times. Out of these, 4 teams have reached the playoffs. Punjab is the only team that failed to finish in the top-4 despite scoring 200+ 9 times. Among the teams that reached the playoffs, Hyderabad scored 200+ 9 times, Bangalore 8 times, Rajasthan 7 times, and Gujarat 6 times. The remaining five teams scored 200 five times or less. 4. Long winning streaks and short losing streaks In a league like the IPL, a playoff spot depends on the momentum of wins and losses. Of the four teams that made it to the playoffs, three Bengaluru, Gujarat, and Hyderabad never lost more than 2 consecutive matches throughout the season. Only Rajasthan lost 3 consecutive matches once. The longest winning streaks were created by Gujarat and Hyderabad. These teams won 5 consecutive matches each, once. Punjab had won 6 out of its first 7 matches. Its third match was washed out due to rain. Punjab could not benefit from this winning streak because, after that, they lost 6 consecutive matches.
