In cricket, a concussion means a head injury caused by the ball hitting the head or neck. When a player suffers a serious injury to the head, which prevents their brain from functioning properly or they feel dizzy and confused, it is called a concussion in medical terminology. The concussion rule in cricket was implemented by the ICC in 2019 so that an injured player is not forced to play by putting them at risk. If a batsman or fielder is hit on the head by the ball, the team’s physio comes onto the field and conducts a concussion test (such as asking the date, place, or player’s name). If a player is not in a condition to play further due to a head injury or concussion, they are removed from the match. In place of the injured player, a concussion substitute (new player) is included in the team with the approval of the match referee. According to the rule, the new player who comes in must be exactly similar to the injured player (such as – batter for batter or bowler for bowler), so that the team’s balance is not disturbed.
