In a rare marital dispute in Indore, a woman sought divorce over dissatisfaction with her physical relationship after marriage, triggering tensions between the two families. While the woman remained firm on ending the marriage, her husband and his family attempted reconciliation. What began as a private disagreement soon escalated into a larger family conflict. The matter was eventually taken to a community mediation panel, where both sides were counselled and medical experts were consulted to assess the concerns raised. After multiple rounds of discussions, the dispute was resolved, and the couple is now reportedly living together peacefully. Sindhi community’s mediation initiative resolved over 800 disputes On the occasion of International Day of Families on May 15, Dainik Bhaskar highlights a unique initiative launched by the Sindhi Panchayat to resolve family disputes within the community. The mediation initiative, started on July 17, 2023, has so far handled more than 800 cases related to marital discord, family conflicts, financial disagreements, and social issues. Community representatives said many families were on the verge of breaking apart, but several disputes were resolved through counselling, dialogue, and mediation led by community elders. Every case handled differently, says founder member According to Kishore Kodwani, around 48% of all cases handled so far were related to marital disputes. Another 18% involved broader family conflicts, 17% were property-related, 12% concerned financial issues, and 10% involved social disputes. Around 1% of complaints were rejected as unsuitable for mediation. Kodwani said that among marital disputes, nearly 60% were linked to dissatisfaction in physical relationships. “These issues often involve medical conditions, mental health, lifestyle differences, or compatibility concerns. Some cases also had psychological dimensions, where counselling by mental health experts helped resolve conflicts,” he said. Doctors and Psychologists involved in counselling The mediation centre also consults doctors in cases involving medical concerns affecting marital relationships. Kodwani said every dispute requires an individual approach and cannot be resolved through a standard formula. In several cases, differences in financial backgrounds also became a source of tension. For example, disputes arose when women from financially stronger families married into comparatively weaker households, resulting in differences in lifestyle, expectations, and social customs. Survey finds higher number of unmarried women in younger age group The Sindhi Panchayat also conducted a survey among marriageable youth within the community. According to the survey, 34% of men and 39% of women in the 22–29 age group were unmarried, indicating a 5% higher proportion of unmarried women in that category. In the 30–40 age group, 60% of men and 57% of women were found to be unmarried.
