Following a series of jailbreak incidents over the past six months, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to upgrade prison security with high-tech measures. Authorities plan to install electric fencing across 108 jails to prevent escape attempts. The proposal for such a system was first conceived after the 2016 Bhopal jailbreak, but implementation began only recently, with the system installed in the state capital last year. Electric fencing to deliver controlled shock Under the new system, prison walls will be fitted with electric fencing carrying a continuous 8,000-volt current. If a prisoner attempts to climb or touch the fence: The system is designed to deter escape attempts without posing a fatal risk. 108 Jails to Be Covered in Statewide Expansion Madhya Pradesh has 125 notified prisons, of which 123 are currently operational. Electric fencing is already installed in 15 jails, including those in: The remaining 108 jails will now be equipped with the system. The fencing will cover approximately 15 km, with an estimated cost of ₹22 crore. The government has approved the project, and the tender process will be conducted through the Madhya Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation (MPSEDC). Jailbreak incidents trigger security overhaul The decision follows multiple escape incidents in recent months: All the escapees were later recaptured, but the incidents exposed significant security lapses. System based on Bina refinery model Officials said the fencing system is inspired by the model used at the Bina Refinery, where similar technology has been effective for years. It has also proven successful in prisons in major cities. Target to complete work within four months Director General of Prisons Varun Kapoor said Madhya Pradesh will become the first state in India to install electric fencing across all its prisons. He added that the budget was approved after sustained efforts and the installation work is expected to be completed within four months.
