Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav on Tuesday released 4 wild buffaloes into an enclosure in the Supkhar Range of Kanha, Balaghat. The event was completed at 9:30 am, shortly after he arrived at the site at 9:15 am. He first landed by helicopter at Topla in Garhi and then travelled by road to the Beda site, where he formally inaugurated the reintroduction project. The buffaloes were brought from Assam’s Kaziranga, covering a distance of nearly 2,000 km to reach Kanha. The state government aims to build on Madhya Pradesh’s identity as a tiger state and also establish it as a “wild buffalo state.” There are also future plans to introduce rhinos in Kanha. Wildlife enthusiasts have welcomed the move, noting that it will strengthen the park’s already rich biodiversity. Wild buffalo had last been recorded in the district in the 1960s and 1970s, but later became extinct. Their reintroduction after decades is being seen as a significant step toward restoring the local ecosystem. He called it a significant step for the environment and the ecological system, noting that the arrival of these animals will help restore a missing link in the ecosystem. The Chief Minister added that under the Prime Minister’s leadership, efforts are underway to bring endangered species and rehabilitate them in the state. He said the move will not only enhance the state’s natural appeal but also boost tourism and the attractiveness of its destinations. The four wild buffaloes brought to Kanha include three females and one adolescent male calf.
