The mobile phone controversy involving Rajasthan Royals’ manager Romi Bhinder has taken a serious turn, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) initiating a formal investigation. The incident has sparked debate around IPL rules and their strict implementation during matches. Bhinder was seen using a mobile phone in the dugout during Rajasthan Royals’ match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati last week. The act quickly went viral on social media, raising questions about a possible breach of IPL protocols. Now, the matter has reached the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU), which is responsible for ensuring fair play and maintaining strict regulations during matches. The development has added further attention to the ongoing IPL season. Notice Issued by BCCI to Romi Bhinder ahead of clash vs SRH According to reports of the Indian Exress, the ACSU has served a notice to Romi Bhinder and has asked him to submit an explanation within 48 hours. The board has taken the issue seriously, as it involves a violation of the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA) rules. IPL Governing Council chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed the development, saying, “We have asked the ACSU to investigate and file a report on the incident.” As per IPL regulations, team managers are allowed to use mobile phones only inside the dressing room. The use of electronic devices in the dugout is restricted and usually permitted only for designated analysts. RR manager shares reason citing medical emergency While the investigation is ongoing, reports suggest that Bhinder’s actions may have been linked to a medical emergency. Sources have indicated that he has faced serious health issues in the past, including a collapsed lung, and continues to deal with asthma-related problems. One source explained, “Romi has lost more than 10 kilos due to medical issues. He has asthma as well because of which he is advised not to walk a long distance or climb stairs frequently. He is with the team and performed various roles for the franchise. Hence he knows the rules and regulations but that phone was in his possession due to medical reasons. Besides, possessing a mobile phone and a laptop in the dugout is allowed as per the protocol. The only problem was the usage but again he was not making calls or receiving any of them. He was just scrolling his phone. He has time and he will try to explain his point of view to the ACSU officials.” Another source added, “We are hopeful that the ACSU officials will keep Romi’s medical conditions in mind before arriving at a conclusion. The problem was he had to walk at least 50 steps before climbing around 20 steps to reach the dressing room and do the same to return to the dugout. That must have forced him to check the phone at the dugout itself.” Viral clip raises concerns, Sooryavanshi spotted during the incident The controversy gained more attention after a video clip showed young Rajasthan Royals player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi sitting beside Bhinder and briefly looking at the phone screen. This raised further concerns about compliance with anti-corruption guidelines. Although there is no clear evidence of wrongdoing beyond the rule breach, the incident has prompted strict scrutiny from the authorities. The ACSU’s role is crucial in maintaining transparency and preventing any misuse of communication devices during matches. Awaiting final decision for the investigation results The final outcome of the investigation will depend on Bhinder’s explanation and the findings of the ACSU. While the rules are clear, the reported medical reasons could play an important role in determining the final decision. For now, the Rajasthan Royals management and fans await clarity, as the controversy continues to unfold during an already action-packed IPL season.
