There is good news for the Cheetah Conservation Project from Kuno National Park in Sheopur, Madhya Pradesh. An approximately 25-month-old Indian-origin female cheetah named ‘Gamini’ has given birth to four cubs in the wild. With this birth, the total number of cheetahs in India has increased to 57. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav shared the update on social media on Saturday, expressing happiness over the success. He congratulated the Forest Department team and all personnel associated with the project, saying that the cheetah conservation programme at Kuno National Park has achieved a major milestone. First Successful Delivery in the Wild According to the Union Minister, this is the first time since the start of the cheetah reintroduction programme in 2022 that a cheetah has given birth in a natural forest environment. The achievement is especially significant as it is believed to be the first successful birth by an Indian-origin female cheetah. CM Mohan Yadav Congratulates Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav said Madhya Pradesh is now becoming a major centre for the growth and settlement of cheetahs. He said that the birth of four cubs by Gamini in an open forest proves that the environment here is suitable for cheetahs. He added that efforts for wildlife and nature conservation are yielding positive results. Gamini had adapted to the natural environment Forest department officials said that female cheetah Gamini had been living in the wild for over a year and had fully adapted to natural conditions. The birth of cubs in the wild indicates that Kuno’s environment is now favourable for cheetahs and that they are successfully breeding. CCF called it a major step for the project Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Uttam Kumar Sharma confirmed the development, calling it a major step towards achieving the core objective of the project. He said the goal is to establish cheetahs in a natural habitat and ensure their successful breeding. He added that Gamini herself was once a cub and is now successfully breeding, which indicates the long-term success of the project.
