The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have suffered a setback in the ongoing IPL 2026 season as Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out due to injury. The announcement was made by the franchise’s director of cricket, Tom Moody, during LSG’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on Thursday. Hasaranga, who was bought for INR 2 crore in the mini auction, was unable to join the squad after picking up an injury earlier this year. His absence comes as a disappointment for fans, but LSG have already started planning for a replacement. Despite this setback, LSG managed to secure a thrilling three-wicket win over KKR, showing strong team performance and depth in their squad. Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out of IPL 2026 due to hamstring injury Wanindu Hasaranga has been out of action since suffering a hamstring tear during Sri Lanka’s opening match of the T20 World Cup 2026 in February. The injury has kept him away from competitive cricket, and he also reportedly missed Sri Lanka Cricket’s mandatory fitness test required to get clearance for IPL participation. Hasaranga has previously played for Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, making him an experienced T20 player. However, his unavailability means LSG will have to move forward without one of their key spin options. Lucknow to announce Hasaranga’s replacement within 24-48 hours LSG have already begun the process of finding a replacement player. Tom Moody confirmed that the team is actively working on it and an official announcement is expected soon. “We are preparing for the fact that he isn’t going to be able to join us,” Moody said during LSG’s game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata on Thursday. We are looking at replacements that should be announced in 24-48 hours,” he concluded. LSG’s performance so far in the IPL 2026 season The Lucknow Super Giants have had a decent start to their IPL 2026 campaign. The team currently sits fifth in the points table, having won two out of their three matches. After losing their opening game against Delhi Capitals, LSG bounced back strongly with wins against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. In the recent match against KKR, young batter Mukul Choudhary played a stunning knock of 54 runs off just 27 balls to guide the team to victory. Lucknow’s strong bowling unit despite Hasaranga’s absence Even without Hasaranga, LSG have a solid bowling lineup. Their spin department includes players like Digvesh Rathi, M Siddharth, and Shahbaz Ahmed, who have performed well so far. The pace attack is led by experienced bowler Mohammed Shami, while Prince Yadav has impressed with his performances. Mohsin Khan, who played in the opening match, is currently sidelined due to stiffness, as confirmed by Moody. Overall, while Hasaranga’s absence is a loss, LSG appear well-balanced and capable of continuing their strong run in the tournament.
