genome-sequencing-machine-worth-₹5-crore-dusts-away:no-staff-or-kits;-samples-sent-elsewhere,-no-investigation-yet

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the world realised the importance of genome sequencing to track viruses and prepare for future threats. However, the situation at Gandhi Medical College presents a contrast. In 2022, the National Center for Disease Control provided a genome sequencing machine worth ₹5 crore to the college, but not a single test has been conducted on it in the past four years. Instead, samples are still being sent to AIIMS Bhopal and laboratories in Pune. GMC management says the machine was provided without their request and requires costly kits, trained staff, and annual maintenance support, which were never arranged. However, officials also did not seek a separate budget from the government or request reagents and technical support from the Indian Council of Medical Research, leaving the machine unused. MGM bought a new machine again Useful in treating everything from TB to cancer Dr. Rakesh Malviya, President, Progressive Medical Teachers Association MP says, The genome sequencing machine is very useful for research. This machine helps in understanding the root cause of diseases by reading the structure of DNA/RNA. It helps in detecting new variants and spread of infectious diseases like Covid, TB, Dengue. In cancer, it is possible to identify gene mutations and choose the right medicine. It also helps in early detection of diseases like Thalassemia and Down syndrome. This technology promotes personalized treatment and makes healthcare services more precise. 3 major reasons
