In a dramatic police operation, the main accused, Asif alias ‘Bam’, in the murder case of Vijay Mewada, was arrested after a short encounter in Bhopal. During the encounter, which lasted around 10 minutes, three rounds of fire were exchanged from both sides. One bullet hit the accused near his right knee, causing him to stumble, after which he was overpowered and arrested. Arrest in Samaspura forest after two-day search After two days of intensive search, police tracked him down in the forests near Samaspura in the Ratibad area. Around 11:30 AM on Wednesday, police received a tip-off that Asif had been spotted walking near the jungle area. A team comprising three sub-inspectors and three constables quickly surrounded the location. On seeing the police, the accused attempted to flee into the dense forest, but was chased and caught. Weapon seized, accused hospitalised At around 12:15 PM, the police transported the accused in a vehicle from Samaspura village to Hamidia Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Police seized a loaded country-made pistol and used cartridges from the spot. Based on a complaint by Ashoka Garden police station in-charge Anurag Lal, an additional case of attempt to murder has been registered against the accused. Accused was on the run, moving on foot According to police, the accused had been frequently spotted in different parts of the Ratibad area over the past few days but managed to escape before teams arrived. He was reportedly moving on foot throughout his escape. On Wednesday, as soon as police reached the location, he ran towards the forest and opened fire during the cordon operation. He was injured in retaliatory firing. Police are yet to confirm who may have provided him shelter during his time on the run. The accused’s pistol, with one live round loaded, was also seized from the spot. Investigations reveal that the accused had walked across Neelbad and Ratibad areas to reach the forests of Samaspura. During his escape, he survived by stopping at roadside eateries for tea and snacks. Police believe he was planning to enter Sehore district through forest routes, a path he was familiar with from previous instances of absconding.
