The trial run of the torrefied charcoal plant at Adampur Khanti, India’s second such facility after Varanasi, has begun. The plant will process 400 tons of dry waste daily and convert it into charcoal for use by NTPC’s thermal power plant for electricity generation, with the first batch expected by Sunday afternoon. During the first three days of the trial, about 800 tons of waste have already been supplied, and 1,800 tons will be processed during the entire trial phase. Built on 15 acres for Rs 220 crore, the plant is expected to help the Municipal Corporation save around Rs 7.3 crore annually by reducing waste disposal costs. Municipal Commissioner Sanskriti Jain inspected the facility on Friday and directed officials to ensure its early full-scale operation. Some machine and equipment fitting work is still underway. Contract signed in 2021 About five years after the contract was signed on October 12, 2021, the plant’s trial began. During this period, due to a fire at the landfill in 2023, delays in permission from the pollution control board, and technical processes, the project fell behind schedule.
