Ahead of the IPL 2026, India head coach Gautam Gambhir is currently spending quality time with his family in Singapore, enjoying a short break with his wife and two daughters after the T20I World Cup triumph in Ahmedabad. With no immediate national team commitments, he is expected to remain free during the IPL window over the next couple of months. Meanwhile, the BCCI has reportedly shortlisted 20 players as part of its early preparations for the 2027 World Cup. Selectors are expected to closely monitor these players during the IPL season across various venues, keeping an eye on their performances and development. His family had also been present in Ahmedabad to witness India lift their third T20 World Cup title, making the celebrations even more special. Gambhir’s rich legacy for KKR in the IPL history Earlier in the history of IPL, Gautam Gambhir has led KKR to two titles as a captain in 2012 2014. Later on after 10 years, he returns to his champion team but this time as a coach. In 2024, KKR clinch their third IPL trophy under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, who is now the captain of Punjab Kings. In the recent past, he shared his eternal love for KKR franchise as he said, “And probably yes, Kolkata did play a huge role in me getting that job. Because if I hadn’t got back to KKR, if we hadn’t done well, probably I wouldn’t have been in that position where I am right now,” Gambhir said. Each selector will attend matches at their assigned venues and watch others on television. This IPL season will mainly focus on players already identified for the ODI format. The selectors are unlikely to pick any new breakout stars based only on IPL performances. A senior official said, “The BCCI is looking at each selector watching at least one game per week, which covers five games per week from the venue. Else obviously they can track on TV.” The IPL will begin with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru on 28 March.
