It’s the dawn of a new era at Rajasthan Royals as the franchise are set to begin their afterlife following the departure of Sanju Samson. Riyan Parag braces to take charge as captain once again after a brief stint last year. The franchise has been purchased by the consortium led by Kal Somani in a mammoth ₹15,289 crores deal. Kumar Sangakkara returns to the dugout as head coach, while there is plenty of spotlight on the 14-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. After his historic century year, the fans will be expecting more from the prodigy. After finishing ninth last year, RR traded in Ravindra Jadeja, and Sam Curran (ruled out due to injury, replaced by Dasun Shanaka) and Donovan Ferreira. In the auction, they purchased Ravi Bishnoi (₹7.20 crore) and Adam Milne (₹2.40 crore). They retained 13 players, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and overseas star Shimron Hetmyer, showing faith in the young core. On paper, the team has a strong batting core, but bowling is where they look vulnerable. They lost plenty of games last year wherein they could have won, but the team crumbled under pressure. Those questions will persist again for the middle order. Also read: Can Sunrisers win a title after 10 years? SRH SWOT Analysis Let’s take a look at Rajasthan Royals’ SWOT analysis and predict how the team can fare under their new captain. Strengths: Strong Indian core, plenty of all-rounders to choose from Batting looks sorted for the Royals as they didn’t tweak what worked well for them last year. The Indian core of players like Vaibhav, Yashasvi, Riyan, and Dhruv Jurel will have to do the heavy lifting after Sanju’s departure. They have added Ravindra Jadeja and Dasun Shanaka, along with Shimron Hetmyer and Donovan Ferreira, to give the team a batting depth which other teams would envy. The inaugural IPL champions have plenty of all-rounders to choose from, which would be a happy headache for Parag. Jadeja, and Shanaka offer decent bowling options if needed, to Parag, who himself can tweak the ball. Weaknesses: Middle order woes continue to remain Shimron Hetmyer had an excellent run in the T20 World Cup 2026; he scored 248 runs at an average of 41.33 and a high score of 85. But beyond him, there aren’t too many finishers that inspire confidence. Jadeja, Shanaka, and Jurel will have to up their game, and there will be high hopes from Ferreira as well. Opportunities: Can Riyan Parag fill Sanju Samson’s boots? The jury is still out on Riyan Parag’s captaincy credentials. The litmus test will not only be captaining a team in transition, but how he raises his personal game will also define his team’s performance. Add to that, Parag will always be compared to the great man before him, Sanju Samson, who helped the team reach the final in 2022. Threats: Can the Royals find a winning combination? There can be a problem of plenty for Riyan Parag as he has a plethora of overseas options to pick from. Archer, Hetmyer, Shanka, Burger, Pretorius, Ferreira, Milne and Maphaka will all be in contention and finding the right balance will be key. Only four overseas players will get the nod, and RR will need to lock in on those four options fast. Archer and Hetmyer have done enough to warrant a place in the side; the two remaining names will depend on the playing combination.
