A brutally strong batting unit, but lack of sting in the bowling department. If there was an IPL team in this edition that would properly define the above statement, it would be Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The franchise last won the IPL in 2016 and have shown promise on a number of occasions. Despite coming close on two other occasions, the Sunrisers have failed to make it past the finish line and this time, they will once again begin their conquest for a second IPL trophy. But do they possess what it takes to erase the ghosts of 2018 and 2024 and become a multi-time IPL-winning outfit? Let us take a look at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026. Strength: Batting loaded with firepower, stable all-rounders Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, Liam Livingstone, Nitish Reddy- if one needed to build a power-packed T20 batting unit, these names and even the above combination would be tough to overlook. If Abhishek doesn’t get you, Head will. If Head flops, Ishan is there to make a mark. And if Ishan fails, Livingstone, Klaasen and Reddy are waiting in the wings. Sunrisers’ batting order is an absolute nightmare for any bowling attack, even the best in the tournament and this is where their true strength lies. Fans are very well aware of the carnage that Abhishek and Head can unleash as a pair up front and if not separated early, some seriously big scores can be expected from the two, despite them having underwhelming T20 World Cup campaigns. The two had put up 691 runs as a pair in 2024 and it was one of the main reasons for their runner-up finish that season. At number three, captain Ishan will walk out to bat. And he would want to continue his red-hot form from the T20 World Cup. From leading Jharkhand to a maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title to playing a pivotal role in India’s T20 World Cup win, Ishan has done it all in the past few months. Closing in on 3000 runs in the IPL, a lot would rest on Ishan’s shoulders if SRH are to go all the way. When it comes to SRH’s batting, Heinrich Klaasen simply cannot be ignored. With 1480 runs at a strike rate of 169.72, the former South African cricketer will be expected to have a big season with the bat for SRH. Nitish Kumar Reddy, the 2024 emerging player award winner, will also be key for SRH with his all-round skills. And eyeballs would also be on young Aniket Verma, who scored crucial runs (236 in 14 games) down the order for SRH at a blistering strike rate of 166.19. Livingstone, SRH’s newest addition, will have a point to prove in this IPL after a fallout with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Livingstone was part of RCB’s team, which won the IPL last year. Sunrisers’ bowling attack lacks sting, especially with the absence of Pat Cummins, whose absence is a big miss. However, in a recent development, it has been reported that Cummins will arrive in India on 24 March. However, the status of his availability remains unclear. The Australian picked up 34 wickets in two seasons for SRH and his wicket-taking ability is something the Sunrisers would lack. And unfortunately, they do not have a bowler who can act as a like-for-like replacement for Cummins. Also, it is unclear as to when the Australian would join SRH in IPL 2026. Jaydev Unadkat is one of the most experienced players in IPL, having played for eight teams, where he picked up 110 wickets. While experience is certainly on his side, it remains to be seen if he is able to fill the void left by Cummins or Mohammed Shami, who was traded to Lucknow Super Giants before the auction. Apart from Unadkat, SRH have Shivam Mavi, Praful Hinge and Onkar Tarmale as the other Indian pace bowlers. One also cannot count out Harshal Patel, who has been a wicket-taker but has proven to be expensive. The attack might possess quality, but the lack of experience might turn out to be a cause for concern. In Cummins’ absence, either one of Brydon Carse or Eshan Malinga have to step up and once again, their lack of enough IPL experience is something that SRH have to contend with. In the spin department, a lot would depend on the shoulders of Zeeshan Ansari and Harsh Dubey if SRH are to make a mark and fight for the title. Opportunities: Chance for young all-rounders to shine While the batting and bowling attacks might look imbalanced, SRH do possess some quality young all-rounders who have a chance to shine and make an impact. Sunrisers have a number of young all-rounders- Nitish Reddy, Harsh Dubey, Kamindu Mendis and Brydon Carse who are packed with talent and potential. And SRH would rely on these all-rounders to provide that balance between the bat and the ball. Dubey, the spin-bowling all-rounder, has been a seasoned performer in domestic cricket and he has a great opportunity to establish himself as the Sunrisers’ lead spin-bowling option alongside Ansari. Mendis has shown glimpses of the immense talent he possess and it’s time he delivers for SRH this year. Livingstone, apart from his exploits with the bat, would also be occasionally expected to chip in with a few overs, especially on tracks assisting spin. Threat: Conceding big scores While Sunrisers have the capability to score big runs, they do stand a massive chance of conceding as many with the bowling attack they have. Unadkat, their most experienced pacer, has had an economy rate of 8.87. Harshal Patel, Malinga, all have economy rates in excess of eight and this is a worrying sign for the 2016 winners. Ansari, their best spinner last year, also leaked almost 10 runs every over. The Sunrisers will have to find a way to deal with this and hope for one or two to step up and make a difference this season.
