After a struggling IPL season last year, the Kolkata Knight Riders decided to rebuild their squad after finishing eighth in the previous season, ahead of the 2026 season in the mini-auction. The franchise brought in several high-profile overseas players as they aim to make a strong comeback in the tournament. At the IPL 2026 mini-auction, KKR had the biggest purse of ₹64.30 crore. The team retained only 12 players and released 10, with the biggest decisions being the departures of all-rounders Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell. Releasing Iyer saved the franchise ₹23.75 crore, while parting ways with Russell freed up another ₹12 crore for the team’s auction strategy. During the auction, KKR signed Australian all-rounder Cameron Green (₹25.30 crore) as Dre Russ’ replacement and also added New Zealand players Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Rachin Ravindra. The franchise strengthened its pace attack with Akash Deep and Kartik Tyagi, while youngsters Tejasvi Dahiya, Daksh Kamra and Prashant Solanki are among the promising new faces to watch in the squad this season. However, the Knight Riders had to cut ties with Mustafizur Rahman, amid pressure from BCCI after the killing of Hindus in Bangladesh. Later on, KKR signed Blessing Muzarabani from Zimbabwe. Let’s have a look at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for KKR this season ahead of the IPL 2026. Strength: Explosive batting lineup, classy all-rounders After the successful end of the T20 World Cup 2026, as per the current form, KKR’s batting lineup looks extremely dangerous on paper. The inclusion of Tim Seifert (NZ), Finn Allen (NZ) and Cameron Green (AUS) could be a smart move by the Knights. Their batting order also includes experienced Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh in the middle order, followed by flamboyant Angkrish Raghuvanshi. The presence of Sunil Narine and Akash Deep at No. 8 increases the depth in the batting order, which can actually ruin the party of the opponents, especially on the flat tracks in Kolkata. The iconic Eden Gardens is no longer a turning track, as it has become a batting paradise these days. Weakness: Lack of depth in the bowling department From the exit of Mustafizur Rahman, Harshit Rana’s injury, to Matheesha Pathirana’s fitness, KKR is already dealing with a concern regarding their bowling attack. Looking into the current form of the Knights’ prime wicket-taker Varun Chakravarthy’s form in the T20 World Cup, the side is dependent on Sunil Narine and his mystery. Varun is expensive in his current form, despite ending the World Cup season as the joint-highest wicket-taker with Jasprit Bumrah. The presence of Umran Malik could be an X-factor only if he is in his rhythm. However, Akash Deep has also been signed to balance the bowling unit. In 2024, all their bowlers had double-digit wickets, which led them to be the champions for the third time, but this season, it seems hard to deal with the bowling options according to their current form. The current form of all these foreign stars could lead KKR to the playoffs with an ease. In the top order, Tim Seifert and Finn Allen could take on any bowlers on their will at any given day. Meanwhile, if Cameron Green justifies the whopping ₹25.20 crore price tag despite his poor form, the opportunity gets even better, followed by the combined experience of Ajinkya Rahane and Manish Pandey. Moreover, the franchise replaced Chandrakant Pandit and promoted Abhishek Nayar as the new head coach. Meanwhile, Dwayne Bravo continues as mentor, with Shane Watson joining as assistant coach and Tim Southee as bowling coach. With their vast T20 and IPL experience, the coaching group will aim to guide KKR towards their fourth IPL title this season. KKR always struggle to play a stable XI till mid-season. They surge in their form in the second half and sometimes it becomes too late to perform. KKR will aim to play a strong XI with a perfect combination early this season to qualify with ease. Moreover, looking at the other franchises, they have moved forward to the next generation and appointed youngsters to lead the side, but KKR is the only side that seems to stick to an old-school mindset in terms of captaincy. Despite having a huge amount in the purse during the mini-auction, they weren’t able to purchase a captaincy option to move forward.
