Gwalior Municipal Corporation has released a list of major property tax defaulters in the city. It includes the names of several prominent personalities and government offices. The most surprising name in the list is that of Gwalior’s Scindia family, who reportedly owe ₹33 lakh in tax to the municipal corporation. As soon as this information became public, political tensions rose. Congress has raised questions about the functioning of the municipal corporation. Leaders say that when tax is strictly collected from common people, then why hasn’t action been taken so far on dues from the ‘palace’ and its associated properties? Congress is trying to corner the administration by calling this discriminatory behaviour. On the other hand, regarding this entire controversy, municipal corporation officials say that the list has been issued according to rules. Officials have clarified that the matter of pending tax on properties related to the Scindia family will be thoroughly investigated, and documents will be matched. For now, the administration is treading carefully in this matter so that the situation becomes clear. Late Madhavrao Scindia’s name in the list This detailed list issued by Gwalior Municipal Corporation includes not only private properties but also many large government institutions. According to the figures, these government institutions have a huge property tax outstanding of about ₹300 crore to the municipal corporation. The shocking thing is that these institutions have not deposited any amount in the name of tax in the municipal corporation’s treasury for a long time, which is also affecting the corporation’s financial position. The most notable name in this list of defaulters is the late Madhavrao Scindia. The municipal corporation has shown an outstanding amount of ₹33 lakh 32 thousand 719 against his name. The presence of such a prominent name in the defaulters’ list has become a topic of discussion. This amount, recorded in the corporation’s files, is said to have been pending for a long time. According to documents, this property associated with the Scindia family is registered at the address ‘193 in front of Katora Tal’ on Jiwaji Club Road. In the municipal corporation’s records, the Property Tax ID for this specific property is written as 1002732779. Currently, municipal corporation officials are engaged in the process of reconciling this technical data and outstanding amount so that further recovery proceedings can be determined. Congress councillor Pramod Khare raised the issue during the Municipal Corporation council meeting held on March 6. He asked whether property tax had been collected from the shops built in front of Katora Tal and from Jai Vilas Palace. He said there are many properties in the city from which tax has not been collected, but the authorities do not want to talk about them. In response, officials said that if the Congress councillor has specific information, he should inform the corporation about where taxes have not been received from the palace or any other property so that action can be taken. It is worth noting that the list issued by the Gwalior Municipal Corporation includes several other defaulters as well, including some government offices that have not yet deposited their service tax.
