India won a record third T20 World Cup trophy on 8 March, beating New Zealand in what turned out to be a lop-sided final. A plethora of records went for a toss in front of a packed house at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as Suryakumar Yadav and his men emerged triumphant and stamped their authority on world cricket once again. This was India’s third ICC title in three years, having won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and also the Champions Trophy in 2025. The 2026 T20 World Cup triumph was also India’s eighth title overall in ICC events. But despite having achieved unprecedented success in the past few ICC events, India still fall short of Australia when it comes to overall ICC trophies. Total ICC trophies won by each team Australia still sit right at the top when it comes to the list of ICC trophies. The Aussies have won a total of 10 ICC trophies to date, which includes six ODI World Cups, two Champions Trophy titles and one T20 World Cup and Test Championship each. India are second on this list with eight ICC trophies. This includes three T20 World Cups, three Champions Trophy and two ODI World Cups. West Indies are the third-most successful team in ICC events with five trophies, while Pakistan and Sri Lanka jointly sit fourth, with three titles each. England also have won 3 ICC titles. New Zealand and South Africa have won two ICC trophies each. Breakdown of India’s ICC trophies When it comes to the number of ICC trophies, India are second only to Australia. India’s first ICC trophy came way back in 1983. Kapil Dev guided India to their maiden ODI World Cup title in England in what turned out to be a watershed moment in the country’s cricketing history. India had to wait till 2002 for more glory in ICC events when the team led by Sourav Ganguly jointly won the Champions Trophy alongside Sri Lanka. Rain had played spoilsport and hence both teams had to share the silverware. The year 2007 saw Indian cricket experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. India were knocked out of the ODI World Cup group stage that year with defeats to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. But that same year saw the Men in Blue redeem themselves as MS Dhoni and his troops won the inaugural T20 World Cup title in South Africa. Dhoni’s hot streak as captain in ICC tournaments continued as India won the ODI World Cup trophy after 28 years, at home. The wicketkeeper-batter hitting a six to seal India’s win in the final still remains a very vivid memory in the annals of Indian cricket. India went on to add more ICC silverware to their trophy cabinet, winning the 2013 Champions Trophy in England. And it was not until 2024 that India won their next ICC trophy, with it coming in the form of the T20 World Cup in Barbados. Can India surpass Australia’s tally of 10 ICC trophies? Realistically, India have a great chance of going past Australia and becoming the most successful team in ICC competitions in the next three years. The next major ICC event in men’s cricket is the 2027 ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in South Africa. The 2025-27 World Test Championship final is also slated to be held next year. And the next T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played in 2028 with Australia and New Zealand as the joint-hosts. It goes without saying that India will surpass Australia in the list of ICC trophies if they manage to win all three of these competitions. But even though India have managed to establish undisputed supremacy in T20Is, the same cannot be said for ODI and Test cricket. Since the 2023 ODI World Cup, India have had six bilateral ODI series, winning three and losing three. One of these three defeats included a 0-3 whitewash at the hands of Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, while the most recent one was a stinging 1-2 loss to New Zealand, that too on home soil. Even Gautam Gambhir, in his post-match press conference after the T20 World Cup win, highlighted India’s not-so-good results in the ODI format of late, losing last two of three bilateral series. When it comes to the 2027 Test Championship, the situation becomes even more complicated. India have had a woeful run in Tests since 2024. Whitewashes at home to New Zealand and South Africa exposed major cracks in India’s Test game. In the ongoing 2025-27 WTC cycle, India have been pushed to the sixth spot after a 0-2 loss to South Africa at home. With nine more Tests remaining, India mathematically do stand a chance of making it to the World Test Championship final. But it would take a monumental effort from Shubman Gill and his team to pull off a turnaround and make it to the top two on the WTC 2025-27 points table.
