A road accident in Goa has left a Bhopal family devastated. Bhagatram Sharma died in the crash, while his wife Leela Sharma suffered serious injuries. Their three-month-old granddaughter was also injured. The family had travelled to Goa to celebrate their daughter Ruchika Sharma’s birthday. Bhagatram Sharma’s body was brought to Bhopal on Thursday. Leela Sharma remains in critical condition and is being brought to Bhopal by ambulance, as doctors said airlifting her is not possible due to multiple fractures. Speaking about the incident, Ruchika Sharma said the accident happened around 4:30 pm on Monday when a speeding Thar hit their car. “I first checked my three-month-old daughter. Then I looked at my mother. Her eyes were open but she was not moving. When I saw my father, he was bleeding heavily and badly injured. I could not understand what to do,” she said. Family alleges accused did not help after crash Ruchika alleged that the accused, identified as Shaurya Goyal, did not help them after the accident and instead recorded videos. She claimed he did not call an ambulance and contacted his father instead. “If he had shown regret or apologised, we might have thought it was a mistake. But he did not even look back,” she said. Her husband Tushar also described the trauma of the incident, saying the family had to manage hospital procedures, police formalities, and care for injured members at the same time. “This is not just a road accident. Our entire family has been shattered,” he said. Post-mortem confirms severe injuries, family questions ‘heart attack’ claim The family said the post-mortem report confirmed that Bhagatram Sharma died due to severe injuries, including a broken neck, rib fractures, and internal bleeding. Tushar questioned why initial reports mentioned a heart attack. “Doctors clearly said the injuries were severe and survival was unlikely,” he said. Leela Sharma has fractures in her pelvis, ribs, and shoulder and is unable to move, according to the family. police say accused was driving, arrested and later granted bail Sub-Inspector Sai Kinlekar of Anjuna police station said CCTV footage confirmed that a young man, Shaurya Goyal from Delhi, was driving the vehicle. Police registered a case, arrested him, and later released him on bail. Both vehicles involved were rented. Police completed the panchnama and post-mortem procedures as part of the investigation. Lawyer explains bail provision in road accident cases Advocate Arun Singh Rana said most fatal road accident cases are registered under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence), which is a bailable offence under current law. He said proposed changes in 2023 aimed to make such offences stricter, but these provisions have not been fully implemented. Family seeks justice, says birthday now a painful reminder The accident has permanently changed the meaning of Ruchika’s birthday. The family said they are seeking justice so that similar incidents do not happen to others. “We do not want revenge. We want justice. February 26 was supposed to be a birthday, but now it will always remind us of this loss,” Ruchika said.
