In Chhindwara, a young woman received a death threat over a phone call for supporting a Hindu organisation. The callers identified themselves as Pathans and said they “run four girls” from her community. They also said those girls would even consume poison for them. They added, “You say we rape, then listen — yes, we really do.” After the audio surfaced, about 1,000 people linked to Hindu organisations took to the streets late at night and staged a protest. They surrounded the police station and warned that if the accused were not arrested by 11 am, they would shut down Chhindwara. According to police records, teams are searching for four unidentified suspects. Sources, however, say three suspects have been detained. Why the matter escalated… Telangana MLA T Raja visited Chhindwara on 16 February to attend a Hindu Garjana rally. During the event, he allegedly made a controversial remark about a community. In response, the Gondwana Gantantra Party organised a rally on 23 February demanding a case be registered against T Raja and the organisers. Hindu organisations opposed this, saying T Raja’s remark was directed at terrorists, and questioned whether the protest meant support for terrorists. In the matter, Hindu organisation leader and Historical Ramlila Mandal president Arvind Rajput had said that if this continued, they would respond “brick for stone.” A 22-year-old woman posted Rajput’s statement as a status on her social media account on Tuesday morning. Around 2 pm, she received an Instagram call. When she answered, three to four youths spoke one after another, threatening her. The callers pressured her to delete the story. When she refused, they began abusing and threatening her. When she objected to the abuse, they even asked her where she was and where she lived. She replied she would meet them at the police station. The callers then told her to come there. Calling themselves Pathans, they also said she should inform “that bald man” (Arvind Rajput) in Chhoti Bazaar that they would not spare him either. The woman informed her friends about the incident, and they passed it on to Rajput. Around 10:30 pm, she reached the police station with friends and family. Rajput also arrived with supporters, and the organisation demanded immediate arrests. Gradually the crowd swelled, and by about 1 am nearly a thousand people had gathered on the road outside the police station, demanding arrests. CSP Ajay Rana reached the spot and assured them of quick action. Around 2 am, the matter calmed on the condition that if arrests were not made by 11 am Wednesday, Chhindwara would be shut down.
Now excerpts of conversation between the young woman and those making threats… Caller: People call us Pathans in Chhindwara. When he (T Raja) came on the 16th, we had called Narendra Patel on the 15th night and explained that abusive language should not be used in Chhindwara, but he still said it at the end. Members of the tribal committee met us and told us, which is why we took out the rally. Caller: Delete your story.
Woman: I will not delete it. Caller: If you don’t delete it, fine, we have the guts to deal with that bald man from Chhoti Bazaar… what you people say that we rape girls — yes, we really do.
(Another boy from behind) — I have four girlfriends from your community, and all four would take poison for me. Woman: Tell him not to come into society, otherwise I will… come into the house… During this, two other boys can be heard continuously abusing in the background. Woman: Brother, they are abusing me, tell me what to do.
Caller: Delete the story.
Woman: No, it will disappear on its own after 24 hours.
Caller: Fine, tell us where you are, where your house is.
Woman: Go to the police station, I’ll meet you there.
Caller: Yes, go to the station. Three youths identified In the case, Arvind Rajput warned that if the accused were not arrested by 11 am Wednesday, Chhindwara would be shut down. According to police sources, three youths — Bilal, Dilawar, and Salman — have surfaced as suspects. Police said the search continued late into the night. After assurances, the protest ended past midnight. The situation in the city is currently said to be normal, though police are maintaining precautionary vigilance.
